Project Summary

The DBLB was primarily constructed to support the downstream gas processing industry on Burrup Peninsula with the capability to handle other bulk liquid products.

Madsen Giersing (MG) was appointed by Barclay Mowlem (BM) to provide the detailed design and technical support services for the design and construct contract for the Dampier Bulk Liquids berth (DBLB).

The marine facility consists of a 500m long approach trestle connecting the shore to the loading platform with four berthing and four mooring dolphins allowing for vessels up to 65,000 DWT.

The approach trestle consists of 15 – 32m spans of a single lane roadway of two prestressed precast concrete T-Roff girders and a 32m long by 6m wide steel truss pipe gallery. The end of the trestle has been designed allow for future extension of the facility to allow for an additional berth.

The 37m by 34m loading platform accommodates seven 400mm loading arms, each with a dedicated product. The platform is constructed using precast concrete pile caps, beams and prestressed deck slabs with an insitu concrete pour stitching the units together.

Extensive use of precast concrete elements and prestressed girders minimised the requirement for in-situ concrete and associated formwork, while also reducing the number of pile bents required. This resulted in a lower cost of the structure.

In conjunction with specialist sub consultants, MG undertook dynamic and static mooring analyses and a berthing analysis to determine the required layout, the minimum number and size of dolphin fenders and mooring hooks.
