The Lekir Bulk Terminal is located on a man-made island approximately 288km North of Kuala Lumper. It was built primarily to service the 2,100 MW capacity coal-fired TNB Janamanjung power plant with a capability to supply 8 million metric tonnes of coal annually.
Madsen Giersing (MG) was appointed by Leighton Contractors to provide the detail design and technical support services for the design and construct contract of the Lekir Bulk Terminal, Malaysia.
The marine facility consists of a 2,028m long approach trestle linking the wharf to the shore. The approach trestle supports three import conveyors with allowance for one future export conveyor and a single lane roadway with discrete passing bays. In addition, a small boat berth, suitable for tugs and line boats, is situated along the trestle.
The 540m long unloading wharf with a single mooring dolphin, is capable of handling various bulk carriers up to 160,000 DWT including Capemax, Panamax and Handymax vessels. Two grab ship unloaders and associated conveyor systems are supported by the wharf.
Numerous cost effective solutions were developed for the project. These involved extensive use of precast elements for the superstructure, thereby avoiding slab falsework as well as allowing a fast construction. Using 33.5m long prestressed precast concrete T-roff girders along the approach trestle reduced the number of pile bents required. Supporting the fender off a precast concrete units linked into the wharf deck with circular hollow struts transferring the fender reaction back to the middle of the wharf, where the raker piles are located, avoided the need for isolated berthing dolphins under the wharf structure
