Project Summary

Madsen Giersing (MG) undertook the design of a falsework system to facilitate construction of the new elevated busway station platform opposite the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

In addition MG provided a variety of temporary works design including formwork, lifting frame for precast items and demolition and propping requirements for the existing suspended slab.

The falsework system was required to carry all prefabricated bridge deck girders and the formwork system for the post tensioned pier headstocks simultaneously.

MG’s innovative design resulted in the development of a support system for the deck girders comprising a twin I-beam seated on sandjacks located on support brackets. The support brackets were stressed to the permanent reinforced concrete columns. The sandjacks made it possible for the contractor to strip away the entire formwork system quickly and in a controlled manner.
